We would like to learn more about your experience of the Toronto Public Library’s 2022 Writer in Residence Program (eight one-hour programs) featuring Howard Shrier. What did you learn in the programs you attended?
- Valuable information on how to structure a book, the importance of an outline and research. Different approaches on how to write and read a thriller. How to focus dialogue – Include all variables, geography, education, circumstances, very specific, will apply to my dialogues
- Howard is a gifted teacher that explains in a clear and full of literary examples manner.
- Very informative and helpful, great practical advice ∙ Learnt a lot – my first draft has significantly improved after this. Was a great experience, in fact the sessions could be two hours. A great overview for beginning writers, and a refresher for current ones. Was great hearing others’ experiences as well as struggles with writing, and suggestions people had to help.
- A chance to learn something from a novelist, what it’s like to be published.
- Keep bringing successful writers like him –with teaching experience like he has
- This was excellent and didn’t need improvement
- This was great. I can’t believe a public library beside my house had such an amazing program. Hope to have Part 2.
- Very inspirational, great

- Good speaker – responsive, creative
- Howard was excellent. More of these programs would definitely be an asset in the future.
